Role of Methane in Net-Zero Scenarios

This project will assess the role of methane in different mitigation scenarios. We will analyze the plausibility of the current methane inventories, and the impacts of their ranges on current and near-term warming trends. We aim to create a set of robust methane mitigation pathways that will quantify the benefits and costs of methane emissions reductions in different sectors of the economy and different parts of the world. While a global assessment will be produced, our focus will be on major emitters, such as USA, Russia, China, India, the Middle East and Europe. The likely reductions in the natural gas sector, rice production, livestock, and waste will be explored.
