Designing Nuclear-Powered Data Centers for Sustainable Digital Infrastructure
The goal of the project is to develop an integrated, quantitative assessment of the environmental and public health implications of nuclear-powered data centers. A central objective is to create open-source, transparent analytical platforms that inform host communities, policymakers, and stakeholders as they evaluate proposals to site small modular reactors (SMRs). We will evaluate the environmental impacts and benefits of nuclear-powered data centers compared to other energy sources. We will explore alternative SMR reactor and system designs aimed at reducing environmental impacts including water use, thermal discharge, and ecosystem disruptions. In addition, we will assess designs for leak-proof long-term spent fuel storage, and for improved monitoring for better detecting anomalies and mitigating accident consequences. With rigorous design, transparent risk assessment, and proactive community engagement, environmental concerns can be effectively mitigated and clearly communicated, fostering informed decision-making and public trust.
