Jon Sampedro

Jon Sampedro holds a Cum Laude PhD in Environmental Economics from the University of the Basque Country (UPV/EHU) and currently serves as an Ikerbasque Research Fellow at the Basque Centre for Climate Change (BC3). He previously worked as a postdoctoral researcher at BC3 and at the Joint Global Change Research Institute in Maryland (USA). He has been appointed an expert member of the World Health Organization's (WHO) Global Technical Advisory Group on Air Pollution and Health, and maintains a strong network of collaborations with research centers, public administrations, and international organizations, including the U.S. Department of Energy (US-DOE), the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (US-EPA), the WHO, and Spain's Ministry for Ecological Transition and Demographic Challenge (MITECO). He has published 41 scientific articles and one book chapter, including 32 works indexed in SCOPUS, more than 90% of them in Q1 journals such as Nature Energy and The Lancet Planetary Health. More than half of his publications rank among the top 25% most cited worldwide, reflecting a highly international research profile (73% of his output involves cross-country collaboration). He has accumulated 1,083 citations in SCOPUS (h-index = 15) and 1,468 in Google Scholar (h-index = 19, i10-index = 26). Sampedro has developed open-access methodological tools for integrated assessment models and, since 2018, has collaborated with MITECO on the analysis of Spain's National Integrated Energy and Climate Plan (PNIEC), leading the evaluation of the health co-benefits derived from reduced air pollution. His doctoral thesis was awarded the UPV/EHU Extraordinary Doctorate Prize and was recognized as the best economics thesis in Spain by the Royal Academy of Doctors in 2020.
